DASP & post-departure tax return fees
Tailored DASP and post-departure tax return fees. Understand complex ATO, Medicare and super fund work, and request a clear ALITAX quote.
DASP assistance and tax returns after leaving Australia can involve much more than lodging a form. ALITAX provides premium, case-specific support: reviewing your tax position, resolving documentation issues, coordinating with the ATO and super funds, and explaining the next steps from overseas. Your fee reflects the professional work and support your case actually needs—not a standard individual tax return price.
Separate from standard individual tax return pricing
The standard individual tax return prices on /pricing are for straightforward returns. They do not include tax returns for clients who have left Australia and engage ALITAX for DASP or other post-departure tax services. Those services are assessed and quoted separately for your circumstances.
Seven reasons a case may need specialist work
Held refunds and ATO follow-up
A tax refund may be delayed or held while the ATO checks information, outstanding obligations or payment details. Resolving this from overseas can require more investigation and follow-up than a straightforward return.
- Review the relevant ATO account position and identify missing information, outstanding lodgements or other issues affecting the refund.
- Help prepare supporting evidence and clarify current contact and payment details, especially when Australian accounts are no longer active.
- Liaise with the ATO within your authority and the agreed scope, and explain requests and progress.
Leaving Australia does not automatically block a refund. Release of funds and processing times remain subject to the ATO's checks and decisions.
TFN restrictions and ATO record issues
A restricted, inactive or mismatched tax record can prevent a case progressing smoothly. Establishing what is wrong and meeting the ATO's verification requirements can take additional professional time.
- Check the TFN and identifying details against the information available for your case.
- Investigate record restrictions, identity mismatches or access issues, and assist with an ATO record review or reactivation where required.
- Coordinate the requested evidence and explain how the record issue affects tax lodgements or super enquiries.
A TFN is normally yours for life, including after moving overseas. Departure alone does not automatically cancel or deactivate it.
Reviewing incorrectly lodged tax returns
Earlier returns may contain incorrect income, visa or residency treatment, missing information, or errors carried across several tax years. Correcting them requires a review of the original records—not simply another lodgement.
- Review the relevant tax years, notices of assessment, income statements and available supporting records.
- Check matters such as departure dates, tax residency and working holiday maker treatment against your circumstances.
- Explain any correction required and prepare amendments within applicable time limits where included in your quote.
Not every previous return needs amendment. We assess the evidence and applicable rules before recommending a correction.
Medicare levy eligibility and missed exemptions
An eligible Medicare levy exemption may have been missed or applied incorrectly. Establishing entitlement can require a year-by-year review of residency, Medicare coverage, exemption periods and dependants.
- Assess the relevant exemption category and the dates and family circumstances that affect eligibility.
- Assist with a Medicare Entitlement Statement where needed and review the evidence before claiming an exemption.
- Check whether a current return or an eligible amendment should reflect the correct Medicare levy treatment.
An exemption is not automatic for temporary visa holders. A Medicare Entitlement Statement alone does not guarantee exemption; all relevant conditions must be met.
Correcting deductions and amounts owing to the ATO
Unsupported or incorrectly claimed deductions can create an inaccurate refund. Our role is to establish the correct tax position, even when a correction reduces a refund or creates an amount payable to the tax office.
- Review the nature of each relevant deduction and the records supporting it.
- Explain which claims need correction and prepare agreed amendments using the available evidence.
- Help you understand any revised assessment and amount owing, including the distinction between tax debts and our professional fee.
Amendments can increase or reduce tax payable. ATO tax, penalties and interest are separate from ALITAX's fee; a larger refund is never guaranteed.
Super fund identity and statutory declaration requirements
Different super funds can require different identity evidence. Name discrepancies, expired documents, multiple funds and overseas certification can make a DASP claim substantially more involved.
- Identify the fund-specific requirements and check the consistency of your identity and super account records.
- Guide you through requested certified documents, statutory declarations or explanations for discrepancies.
- Coordinate applications and document follow-up across the relevant funds, including ATO-held super where applicable.
Certification and witnessing requirements depend on the fund and document. An authorised witness or third-party service may be needed; we do not promise acceptance by a fund.
Extra explanation, language support and overseas communication
Tax and super requests can be difficult to understand, particularly when English is not your first language or you are managing the process across countries and time zones. Clear communication is part of the work.
- Allow time for plain-language explanations of documents, choices and responsibilities.
- Help you understand ATO and super fund requests and coordinate the information needed from overseas.
- Discuss additional communication, interpreting or document translation needs when assessing the scope of your case.
Any specialist interpreting, certified translation or other third-party costs are clarified in the quote rather than assumed to be included.

A clear quote before work begins
ALITAX provides a tailored, fixed-fee quote for the agreed scope before work begins. Your quote identifies the services, professional fee, GST treatment and payment arrangement. Where you are also due an Australian tax refund, the agreed fee may be deducted from that tax refund only—never from your DASP super payment. If the tax refund covers only part of the fee, the remainder is payable upfront. If there is no tax refund, the full agreed fee is payable upfront. Standard individual tax return prices do not apply to DASP or post-departure tax work.
- Which services and tax years are included, and which super funds require work.
- The agreed professional fee, GST treatment and total payable.
- The document preparation, enquiries and follow-up included in the scope.
- Any external certification, translation or other third-party costs.
- Any fee-from-tax-refund arrangement and the balance payable upfront.
Only the services agreed in your quote are included. If further work is identified, we explain the additional scope and quote it separately for your approval before proceeding.
DASP and an Australian income tax return are separate processes. ALITAX's professional fee is separate from DASP withholding tax, any amount owing to the ATO and third-party charges. Refund amounts, Medicare levy eligibility, fund acceptance and processing times depend on your circumstances and the decisions of the relevant authority—not on paying a premium fee.
Frequently asked questions
Do standard individual tax return prices cover DASP clients?
The standard individual tax return prices on /pricing are for straightforward returns. They do not include tax returns for clients who have left Australia and engage ALITAX for DASP or other post-departure tax services. Those services are assessed and quoted separately for your circumstances.
How much does ALITAX charge for DASP and post-departure tax work?
ALITAX provides a tailored, fixed-fee quote for the agreed scope before work begins. Your quote identifies the services, professional fee, GST treatment and payment arrangement. Where you are also due an Australian tax refund, the agreed fee may be deducted from that tax refund only—never from your DASP super payment. If the tax refund covers only part of the fee, the remainder is payable upfront. If there is no tax refund, the full agreed fee is payable upfront. Standard individual tax return prices do not apply to DASP or post-departure tax work.
Why can these services cost more than a simple individual tax return?
The work may include held-refund enquiries, TFN record issues, reviewing or amending earlier returns, Medicare levy evidence, correcting deductions, super fund identity and statutory declaration requirements, and additional overseas communication. Our premium fee reflects the agreed professional work, responsibility and support—not just submitting a form. Not every case requires every service.
Are my tax return and DASP claim the same service?
No. An Australian tax return deals with your income tax position. DASP is a separate superannuation claim for eligible former temporary residents. Some clients need one service and others need both. Your quote identifies which services and tax years are included.
What will my written quote explain?
Which services and tax years are included, and which super funds require work. The agreed professional fee, GST treatment and total payable. The document preparation, enquiries and follow-up included in the scope. Any external certification, translation or other third-party costs. Any fee-from-tax-refund arrangement and the balance payable upfront. Only the services agreed in your quote are included. If further work is identified, we explain the additional scope and quote it separately for your approval before proceeding.
Does paying a premium fee guarantee a refund or faster payment?
No. Our fee pays for the agreed professional service. The ATO and super funds determine the outcome and timing. Correcting a return can reduce a refund or result in tax owing, and Medicare levy exemption is subject to eligibility and evidence.
Does leaving Australia automatically deactivate my TFN?
No. The ATO says your TFN is yours for life, including when you go overseas. Where a record is restricted, inactive or contains mismatched details, we can assess the issue and assist with the relevant ATO enquiries within the agreed scope.
Do I have to pay a tax agent to apply for DASP?
No. Eligible applicants can use the ATO's online DASP application system free of charge. ALITAX's fee is for the professional assistance, authorised representation and case-specific support you choose to engage us for; it is not an ATO application fee.
